This is an Austrian Model 1842 cruciform bayonet from the Civil War era. This bayonet was designed to utilize the Laukart System of a spring catch attachment found on the Model 42 series of Austrian muskets. These straight cut mortised bayonets have a high bridge that just passed over the muzzle. A stud guided the bayonet and it was secured by a spring loaded catch. Some of these bayonets were later altered by redoing the mortise and adding a locking ring. This original condition bayonet measures 22" overall, having a 3" socket. The four point blade is in unaltered condition. The left side of the shank is stamped with an asterisk and the letter I, or number 1. The overall appearance of the bayonet is a dark steel gray with very little pitting. These were imported before and during the Civil War, and the Confederate Army of Tennessee loved those Lorenz rifles! this is not a common bayonet and will go along way in completing your Civil War bayonet collection.
