This is a relic condition Model 1855 two band stock manufactured by Harpers Ferry that was recovered from northern Georgia. Approximately 7600 of these rifled muskets were produced before the Arsenal fell into the hands of the Confederates. On 18 April, 1861, Union forces abandoned the Harpers Ferry Arsenal and set it on fire to prevent the Confederate forces from using it. Unfortunately for the Union, many of the near by inhabitants were employed by the Arsenal. They prevented the fire from spreading, and the Confederate forces were able to secure and relocate most of the machinery and tooling. This relic condition stock is in two pieces. It has broken in two at the rear barrel band. The longest pieces measures 27 1/2" and measures from the butt plate section of the stock to the rear barrel band. The fore hand section measure 13" and terminates just prior to the end cap. The larger of the two pieces has been repaired, having been glued back together at about the midway point of the lock recess. This one came into the shop with oral family history of being picked up along a creek just south of the Chickamauga Battlefield. Whatever happened to the hard parts is anybodies guess! This could be one of the rifle stocks produced at the Harpers Ferry Arsenal as there is a legible oval cartouche with the letters FAS within in script. This goes along great with excavated relics, especially if you have items recovered from the Chickamauga area!
