This is an excavated Civil War era clay pipe bowl with no manufacturers name on it. Clay pipes were very popular during the mid 1800's. They are regularly recovered in camp sites of both Union and Confederate armies. This one is white in appearance and has had the stem broken off. The bowl is approximately 1 1/4" in depth and 7/8" across the opening. The bowl has a heart that has been checkered on the right side. The appear to be initials on the rear of the bowl, but I can only make out one, W. This was recovered along the Green River close to Munfordville, Kentucky. A small action took place at Rowlett's Station on 7 December, 1861 between Union forces under the command of Brigadier General Alexander McCook and Confederate forces under the command of Brigadier General Thomas Hindman. Most likely this pipe came from that action. This would look perfect in a camp display or personal articles grouping.
