This is a non excavated Civil War era clay pipe bowl with no manufacturers name on it. Clay pipes were very popular during the mid 1800's. They are regularly recovered in camp sites of both Union and Confederate armies. This one is white in appearance and has had the stem broken off. The bowl is approximately 1 1/4" in depth and 7/8" across the opening. The bowl has a simple decoration, a checkered heart on the right side of the bowl. On the back of the bowl are the initials TW. If it had a stem this little personal artifact could still be smoked! Many soldiers from both sides carried these and relaxed when they could with a good smoke. This would look perfect in a camp display or personal articles grouping.
