This is a Native American spun brass trade kettle manufactured in the 1870's. It measures 5" tall, has a tapered design that is 8" in diameter at the top and 6 1/2" at the bottom. It has a couple of dents in the sides that have caused cracks. The photos show the stress cracks in the side of the kettle. Stamped on the bottom of the kettle is "H W HAYDEN'S BY THE ANSONIA BRASS CO" in a circle. Inside the circle it is stamped PATENT/DEC. 16. 1851./MANUFACTURED. The interior of the kettle shows plenty of use and has a dark, aged patina. The exterior of the kettle has an aged, brass and copper look. The wrought iron handle is retained by two blocks that are copper riveted to the kettle. The top of the kettle has a rolled lip. These kettles were traded to the Native Americans for furs and other trade goods.
