This is a Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword imported from Germany. The blade measures 31" in length, 1 3/16" wide and has a spine 5/16" wide at the hilt. The overall length of the sword is 36 3/4". This blade has a bright polished finish. There is one small nick on the cutting edge of the blade. There is a stopped fuller that begins at the ricasso and stops approximately 8 1/4" from the tip of the blade. Both sides of the blade are etched, beginning at the ricasso and going approximately half way down the blade. Ornate floral designs with cannons and stands of flags, and other military items are found on either side. The reverse ricasso is stamped KULL, while the obverse is stamped with what appears to be a skull. Engraved into the blade approximately 2" above the skull is T KULL, most likely the sword maker. The opposite side of the blade is engraved SOLINGEN. The leather throat washer is missing. The brass hilt is in good condition, displaying a beautiful darkening golden patina. The hilt is loose in regards to the grip. It also has the decorative floral design on the quillion, guard and pommel. The wooden grip is covered in marine skin, with double strand brass wire. The wire is just a little loose, but the skin remains tight to the grip. The scabbard is metal with brass mounts. It is dent free and exhibits a smooth, dark appearance. This was probably a private purchase Union officer's sword, as they were required to buy their own. A very nice example of a Union used Infantry sword from the Civil War period.
