This is an 1890's dress tunic from the New York state National Guard. The dark blue wool material this tunic is made of marks the end of this style uniform, as the Army went to the khaki colored uniforms in the late 1890's. This particular uniform is a state inspected tunic made by the Maydem Costume Co of New York. Their company name and location are ink stamped on the lining. An inspectors ink stamp is beside the makers on the lining that reads INSPECTED in an oval above ORD. DEP'T/S.N.Y./1893, all within an oval stamped border. There are 10 NEW York EXCELSIOR buttons on the front of the single breasted tunic, and four on the back. All have the SNY back mark of the Scovil or Waterbury button companies. Several of the buttons have been resewn at different times. The blue wool color is still very vibrant. There is moderate moth damage, and some of the stitching is broken on the front of the jacket. The collar, epaulettes and cuff tabs are Infantry blue. An Infantry Blue 1902 Aiguillette comes with the uniform, along with a New York State National Guard service cross for the 13th Regiment. The tunic is fully lined, to include the sleeves. There are a couple of stains on the lining, showing this one did get worn! The stitching is broken and missing in several places. There is one interior pocket. While it does suffer some from the ravages of time, it still displays well. It would look great in a late 1800's Infantry display!
