This is a Model 1902 "Bell" cap used by the US Army prior to the outbreak of WWI. The hat, constructed of blue wool material with black leather visor is in excellent condition. The wool has no damage of any type and retains a vibrant blue color. There are four black vet rivets in the crown that are all still in place. A black leather chin strap is secured to the hat by two New York State seal buttons. The black visor is securely attached to the hat. It has a small blemish about 1/2" long on the under side. The green band that encircles the base of the cap is in very good condition, with no damage. Sewn to the front of the hat is a gold bullion wreath. Within the wreath in sliver bullion are the letters SV over the number 137. The 137th New York Volunteer Infantry regiment is best known for it's hard fighting during the Civil War. The hat is lined with polished cotton and has a brown leather sweat band. The lining is completely intact, as well as the sweat band. This one does not have a makers label present. There is a name written on the outside of the sweatband, but I can't make it out. There is no size tag, but the hat seems to be around 7 1/8". It needs to be reshaped due to being stored improperly. This is an early 1900's uniform hat that would compliment your Model 1902 dress uniform well.
