This is a Grand Army of the Republic hat badge with the 6th Corps insignia in the center of the wreath. The wreath is 2 1/2" wide and 1 3/4" tall. The wreath has great eye appeal, with the high points showing a golden color, while the low points of the wreath are an aged black. In the center of the wreath is the insignia of the 6th Corps, Army of the Potomac. The badge is retained by a single threaded pin and nut. All soldered joints are strong. The 6th Corps emblem is silver plated ans tarnished around the edges. The 6th Corps was formed in 1862, with 24,911 men and 40 pieces of artillery. It saw action at The battle of Gaines' Mill, Savage's Station, Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Rappahannock Station, The Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864, the Siege of Petersburg and the fianl battle at Sayler's Creek. This was a hard fighting Corp that saw plenty of action, and was disbanded on 28 June, 1865. The badge displays great on own, but would really add some sizzle to a 6th Corps veterans slouch hat!
