This is an Edwardian pocket compass set in an oak case. The case measures 2 3/4" by 2 3/4" by 1/2". The dial has a 360 degree graduated scale for compass readings. There are eight main cardinal points on the dial. This small compass was most likely made in England fro export to the French. This is evidenced by the marking for West, which is an 'O' (Ouest). The directional needle is blued and is held stationary while in transit by a brass thumb activate switch. There are two brass thumb screws that hold the two piece case together. This has been together so long you can barely see the separation line between the two halves. It is possible that this one could have been used during WWI and made it's way to the states as a souvenir. It's a cool little piece that would fit into a display from that era or stnad on it's own.
