This is a Model 1858 Cavalry insignia worn by Union cavalrymen during the Civil War. This device was worn with the Hardee hat and sometimes on the top or front of kepis. They were worn with the edged side of the blade up during the Civil War. When the Army still had Dragoon and Cavalry unit's the insignia was worn differently to distinguish between the two different types of units. Between 1858 and 1861 Dragoon units wore the insignia the traditional way, with the edged side up. Cavalry units during the same time period wore it with the edged side down. This set of brass Cavalry insignia is in very good non dug condition. It measures 3 3/8" across and 1 3/4" high. There are no bends or creases to be found. The back side retains two wire hooks, still solidly soldered on. Normally these have four hooks, one in each corner. This one only has two, and looks to have always only had two. This Cav brass will display great on it's own, or if done carefully compliment any Cavalry headgear!
