This is a piece of American World War II trench art depicting a fighter plane made from brass and .50 caliber ammunition. It measures 5 1/2" from the engine cowl to the tail. It measure 6 3/4" from wing tip to wing tip. The fuselage of the little fighter is made from a .50 caliber shell case. The date on the head stamp reads 42. The cockpit canopy is made from a projectile of another .50 caliber round, It has been dove tailed into the shell case and gives the appearance of an actual canopy. The wings and tail section are made of brass. The wings have also been fitted into the shell case and soldered in place. The tail section is removeable. It is the actual projectile for the shell case. As with the wings, the three piece tail has been fitted into the projectile and soldered in place. If I was guessing I'd say this was made aboard ship somewhere. Just a cool little piece of WWII history that may add that like touch your collection is missing!
