This is an import tin canteen from France with reported American Civil War use. This kidney shaped canteen measures 5 3/4" tall, 5 3/4" wide and is 2 1/2" deep. It is made of tin and has the typical lead soldering at the seams. The body of the canteen is made of three part construction, the body itself with one seam, and the top and bottom being soldered on. The thing that makes this one different is the vent soldered on top, along with the spout, both being approximately 1" tall. The canteen looks to probably hold a quart of liquid. The spout is capped with a cork stopper, retained by a chain attached to one of the sling guides. This canteen was designed to be worn against the body suspended by a sling. The leather strap that comes with this one is not long enough to have been worn over the shoulder. It looks as though it probably hung from a hook on the soldiers cartridge belt. The canteen and leather are in very good condition. Written in white marker on the bottom of the canteen is "MISSISSIPPI/ESTATE/'74". One can only assume that this was at one time purchased in 1974 at a Mississippi estate sale. To bad they didn't list whose estate it was!
