This is a non excavated Civil War era clay pipe manufactured by W. Christie of Glasgow, Scotland. Clay pipes were very popular during the mid 1800's. They are regularly recovered in camp sites of both Union and Confederate armies. This one is white in appearance and measures 4 1/4" in length. The bowl is approximately 1 1/2" in depth and 7/8" across the opening. On the left side of the stem the number 24 and the name W. CHRISTIE are found. There is some more lettering on the right side of the stem, but I can't make it out. This little personal artifact can still be smoked! Many soldiers from both sides carried these and relaxed when they could with a good smoke. This would look perfect in a camp display or personal articles grouping.
