This is a shadow box containing a section of wing from a German Heinkel He111 bomber that was downed over England during World War II. The shadow box measures 14 3/4" wide, 19" high and 2 1/4" deep. It contains a computer printout photo of a He111 in flight, a 9 1/2" by 8" section of fuselage from an actual He111 and a description of the artifact and how it was obtained. The HE111 was Germany's medium bomber and was used extensively during WWII. The narrative included reads: "This artifact is from a Heinkel He111 which was lost over England August 30, 1940, when F/O E.J. Morris rammed it with his Hawker Hurricane, resulting in the loss of both planes. Morris, and two of the five He111 crew parachuted to safety. Three of the He111 crew perished in the crash. This portion of the Baltic Cross from one of the wings of the He111 was collected by Dr. J.D. McIntosh, a Captain in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, 4th Field Ambulance." So now you have the who, when, what and where, just not the why. One thing is for sure, Flight Officer Morris was determined to bring this German bomber down! One can only speculate as to why he rammed the bomber to knock it out of the sky. The Hawker Hurricane was armed with 8 .50 caliber Browning machine guns. The plane was flown mainly by the Royal Canadian Air Force, which would help explain why the good Dr. McIntosh came by this piece. This incident occurred during the height of the Battle of Britian. This will make a great addition to any WWII Air Force collection.
