This is a Grand Army of the Republic kepi manufactured circa 1880's - 1890's. The kepi is made of blue jean cloth and is machine sewn. It has no markers label or size tag, but appears to be about a size 7. The stitching is strong and unbroken. The black tarred visor is securely attached to the body of the kepi and in very good condition. The underside of the visor is green. The buttons are marked GAR and are tightly sewn on. I can see no back mark on the buttons. The laurel wreath has the GAR letters floating on the center of the wreath. The chin strap is made of gold bullion, and is more decorative than functional. The brown leather sweatband shows honest wear and is securely attached. The liner is a light colored osnaburg material and is also securely stitched in place. This is a very good representative of a post war GAR kepi worn by Union veterans of the Civil War during post war reunions.
