This is an import Model 1850 Foot Officers sword from the Civil War. The sword has an overall length of 37 3/4", with a 32" blade. The blade has a stopped fuller that runs 26 1/2" long. The edge is free of nicks. The blade is bright with some frost still showing, with black age spots scattered along the blade on both sides. There are no makers marks visible on the ricasso. It appears to be a European made blade, probably German, that was assembled here in the states. The obverse side of the blade has lots of foliate etchings, military shields, flags, an eagle with shield, E Plurubus Enum on a scroll ending in more foliate etching. The reverse side of the blade is etched with more foliate, the letters US, and ending with foliate. The leather washer is still reporting for duty. The brass hilt retains some of the gilt, but has a dark, aged patina. The pommel cap is secure on the tang, the peen looks to have never been disturbed. The leather wrap is completely intact and shows honest wear. The double strand wire is intact and remains tight to the grip. The hilt and grip are still very tight to the blade, with no deflection. This one would look great in a Union Infantry Officer's display.
