This is a half stock rifle that came out of Nashville, Tennessee circa 1820 - 1850. This percussion rifle measures 50" in length with a 34 5/8" octagon barrel. The barrel a dark plum/black patina and has a smooth, pit free exterior. The bore is .38 caliber and is dark as well. The rear buckhorn style sight is dovetailed into the barrel. The front sight is a brass blade design. The two ramrod thimbles are securely attached to the barrel. There are no makers stamps or marks anywhere on this gun. The lockplate is unmarked, iron and has a smooth, dark patina to match the barrel. The mechanics work, but are a little lazy on this one. The hammer and set trigger work, but the hammer doesn't always fall when the trigger is depressed. This could be repaired if the buyer requests. The trigger guard, side plate and butt plate are made of brass. There is no patchbox in the stock. The half stock has been stained to resemble the curly, or "tiger striped" maple found on earlier produced Kentucky rifle. The forestock has had some repairs on both sides of the barrel channel. They look to have been done quite some time ago, along with the repair on the left side of the barrel tang and on the right side forward of the lockplate and below it. All of the repairs have been done by a competent gunsmith long ago, and do not detract from the beauty of this old gun, just mentioned for accuracy. The left side stock comb has a cheek rest. This one came into the Smyrna shop just before everything was moved to our new store location in Kingsport, Tn. All the former owner knew was that it has always been in his family and that they had settled in Nashville just after the Civil War ended.
