This is an early 1900's US Navy Fore and Aft hat made by the S.N. Meyer company located at 922 7th Ave NW, Washington D.C. These hats were worn with the Officer's dress uniform from the late 1700's all the way up until 1940. The hat is made of beaver and is in very good condition. It has the rank of a Captain. The gold bullion tassels are in very good condition, no fraying at all. The brown leather sweatband shows honest wear. The size tag indicates this one is a 7 1/8". On the inside of the sweatband written in ink is the rank and name of CAPT S L SEIGEL. Unfortunately I don't have the time to research this Naval officer. The hat comes with a metal storage case that has been jappened black. The case is in good condition, showing just a couple of small dents and scratches. Stenciled on the top of the case is S.N. MEYER/Military & Society/-Goods-/1411 Penna Ave. N.W./WASH. D.C. This would look good displayed with a WWI era Naval dress uniform. It will also make a nice research project for you Naval collectors out there.
