This is a Union breast plate from the Civil War. These plates were worn on the shoulder strap of Union cartridge boxes. The face of the plate shows the Union eagle. In the right talon it carries three arrows of war. In the left talon it clutches the olive branch of peace. The back still retains all of the lead filler and both attachment hooks. There is no makers back mark visible. The face of the plate has a beautiful dark chocolate patina. Around the rim of the plate dirt from the Middle Tennessee excavation site still holds on! This one was dug on private property with the land owner's permission. There is a slight curve to the plate and a very small ding at the very top on the rim. This one displays great and would look good in any dug collection.
