This is a Model 1902 "Bell" cap used by the US Army prior to the outbreak of WWI. The hat, constructed of blue wool material with black leather visor is in excellent condition. The wool has no damage of any type and retains a vibrant blue color. There are four black vet rivets in the crown that are all still in place. A black leather chin strap is secured to the hat by two US Army eagle buttons. The black visor is securely attached to the hat. It has some cracking along the entire visor, but displays beautifully. The hat has a green band, that color normally associated with the medical corps. Attached to the front of the hat is a brass crossed rifles insignia of the Infantry. Above the crossed rifles is the number 30, below the letter A. This is the designation of A Company, 30th Infantry Regiment. The 30th Infantry Regiment has a long and storied lineage, being formed in 1813. It saw service against the British during the war of 1812. The regiment did not participate in the Mexican American war, but did fight in the American Civil War redesignated as the 12th US Infantry. At the end of the Civil War the 12 was deactivated and once again designated the 30th Regiment. This regiment became part of the Third Infantry Division and won great acclaim during both World War I and World War II. This regiment has had 12 soldiers go on to become Medal of Honor recipients. The hat is lined with polished cotton and has a brown leather sweat band. The lining is completely intact, as well as the sweat band. In the center of the lining is the makers emblem of R.W. Stockley & Co. This company was located at 810 Walnut St, Philadelphia, Pa and was mostly known for manufacturing fire fighters uniforms and equipment. The firm began their business in 1898. Written on the outside of the sweat band is the name of W. Watts. There is no size tag, but the hat seems to be around 7 1/8". This is an early 1900's uniform hat that would compliment your Model 1902 dress uniform well.
