This is a full plate tintype of a Union private taken during the Civil War. The image has great clarity and definition. It shows a young soldier seated, wearing a kepi and coat. The letter E can clearly be seen on his kepi, as well as the brass buckle on his chin strap. The coat has a standing collar well over an inch tall and epaulets on the shoulders. The six visible buttons appear to be flat. This image comes from a collector known to have favored Union Sharpshooters. There is an old studio paper tag on the back of the frame. It is very brittle and has a few spots missing. The dark tag makes reading the print difficult. I believe that part of the studio address was printed on a part of the paper that is missing, but you can still make out the letters N. H., perhaps being New Hampshire. A name is written in cursive at the bottom of the tag, who knows if it was a photographer or the subjects name. I can not clearly make the name out. If you're an image guy this one will certainly catch your eye.
