This is a Model 1910 Hand Axe and maker marked canvas carrier. The axe head is stamped with US only, a characteristic of a WWI item. The WWI heads were stamped with US only, the WWII heads were stamped with US, manufacturer and date of manufacture. The hafts for the WWI axes were unpainted, while the WWII hafts were painted olive drab. The canvas carriers remained unchanged with the exception of the date stamped on the inside. This axe is a WWI head with a what appears to be an original WWI haft that has had OD paint haphazardly applied. The carrier is khaki colored cotton. The inside flap is stamped R.H. Long 1-18. There are some stained spots on the back of the carrier and one on the closure strap. The only defect this one has is the wire bail carrier is missing, along with the material used to attach it to the carrier. The wire bails were used to hang the carrier from a web belt, harness or pack system equipped with eyelets. These hand axes were used during both WWI and WWII. This one is a good example of a WWI version that survived quite well. If you collect US doughboy equipment this one should interest you!
