This is a short sword from the 1820's. The sword measures 31" overall, with the blade measuring 25 3/4". The width of the blade is 1 1/4" wide at the hilt and has an unstopped fuller. There are no stamps or markings to identify the maker of the sword, but I believe it is European made. The overall appearance of the blade is a black, attic patina. The edge has a couple of nicks, as if it may have actually been used! The bone handle a crack on the reverse side approximately 1 1/2" long. The grip has been grooved to accept a wire wrap. A small remnant remains to indicate that it once had a twisted double strand brass wire. The bone has taken on a light tan patina. The brass hilt is made up of a single knucklebow with a 1 3/4" quillon. There are elaborate designs on both sides of the knucklebow and ferrule. They appear to be figures dressed in medieval armor and helmets. The pommel cap is approximately 1/4" thick and has the face of a young man wearing a wreath of laurel leaves. The pommel is tight to the grip, the grip is tight to the tang. The small peen appears to be undisturbed. There is no scabbard with this one. I believe this sword is similar to the "gentlemans" sword of the late 1700's - early 1800's, more of a status symbol than a weapon.
