This is a side by side, black powder percussion shotgun made by Parker from the mid 1800's. The gun has an overall length of 33 1/2", with the barrel lengths being 16 1/2". This is not a shotgun made by the famous American Parker Brothers shotgun makers. The shortened barrels were at some point nickel plated, but around 50% of the plating has worn off. The bores are turning dark with moderate rusting in some areas. The barrels are 12 guage and are stamped with the British barrel proof mark of 1856. Each barrel has also been stamped with the number 17. The upper barrel rib is engraved "Fine English Twist". The lockplates are both stamped with the name PARKER within a banner. The locks, hammers, trigger guard, nose cap and butt plate all have simple, but ornate engravings. They also bear the same dark gray patina. The mechanics work fine, with both hammers locking in half and full cock. The wood stock is in very good condition, with no age cracks or wood loss. The wrist area is checkered. The entire stock has been stained a dark color to resemble black walnut. We picked this little street cannon up at the Tulsa show from a local vendor. He related that it was used as a coach gun for the overland stage that traveled through the area. This one has shorter barrels than factory made coach guns, and is not made by one of the known manufacturers. However, it definitely looks the part, and is priced accordingly. If you collect the American west, this one may be for you!
