WWII USAAF Eastern Training Command Leather Jacket Patch

This is a leather patch with the distinctive unit insignia of the USAAF Eastern Flying Training Command from World War II. These patches were worn the Air Corps famous A-2 flight jackets. The Eastern flying command was established on 8 July, 1940 by the Office of the Chief of Air Corps, as part of the expansion of the training department of the Air Corps. When France fell in May of 1940 the US began to rapidly expand it's military forces. Large numbers of men entered the military, expanding the training requirements of the Air Corps dramatically. The training of aircrews was divided into three training centers, Eastern, Gulf Coast and Western. In July of 1943 the centers were redesignated Eastern, Central and Western Training Commands. The schools operated by the Eastern Flight Training Command in 1944 were: Classification, Preflight, Primary, Basic and Advanced. In addition to the American Air Cadets, the Eastern Command also trained British Royal Air Force and Free French Air Force cadets. The Eastern Flight training Command was inactivated 15 December, 1945. The patch 5" across and is in near mint condition. There is some cracking of the shield due to shrinkage of the decal.
