This is a Carte de Vista of a Michigan Infantryman from the Civil War. The card measures 2 7/16" wide and 4" high. The image is clear, and is of an oval bust subject set within an ornate printed frame. There are several small stains on the front of the image, but only one small spot on the soldier in then left bottom quadrant. The soldier is wearing a nine button sack coat with no head gear or any accoutrements. There is no back mark on the image, but some light pencil writing is at the top. I can make out Wiles, Mich, the letters RX and cwar. There is also some lighter pencil writing in cursive but I can't make it out. A quick check of the database showed four results for soldiers named Wiles from Michigan. Three were in the 3rd Michigan Infantry and one was from the 5th Michigan Infantry. My guess is that the three from the third were brothers and maybe the one from the 5th was a cousin. The three from the 3rd Michigan were aged 33, 30 and 25. There is some more research to be done on this one. But that will have to be done by someone besides me! One of you Michigan collectors should snatch this one up and finish the research!
