This is a German SA Medical armband from World War II. The Sturmabteilung, or SA, translates to Storm Detachment. It was the original paramilitary wing of the Nazi party. The SA played a vital role in Hitler's rise to power in the 1920's and 30's. The SA was responsible for providing protection during Nazi rallies and assemblies, opposing rival paramilitary parties, and intimidating minorities. The SA was also known as the "Brownshirts" due to the color of their uniforms. The SA was disempowered after Hitler ordered the blood purge of 1934, which became to be called "The night of the long knives." The SA was superseded by the SS, but was not officially disbanded until German surrendered to the Allied powers in 1945. The armband is made of white cotton material with a three inch red rune sewn in the center. It measures 8 1/4" wide and 4 1/2" tall.
