English 12 Gauge Double Barrel Shotgun
Item #: AA1175
This is a black powder side by side 12 gauge shotgun manufactured in Birmingham, England by Ward. The shotgun has an overall length of 47", with barrel lengths of 30 1/2". The barrels, lockplates, trigger guard and butt plate all have a matching dark patina. The exterior of the barrels have a smooth, dark appearance. The rib between the barrels is stamped "London Fine Twist". The bores are dark and have moderate rusting present. A small brass bead sight is located 1/4" behind the muzzles on the barrel rib. There is some simple engraving on the breech and barrel tang. The bottom side of the barrels are stamped from breech to muzzle with the Birmingham provisional proof for barrels, the Birmingham viewers mark, the number 12 and the Birmingham definitive black powder proof for shotguns. The Birmingham provisional proof was first used in 1856. The shotgun barrel proof mark was used between 1868 and 1925. The right barrel also has the letters DT stamped on it. The lockplates are also have a very smooth appearance, with more simple engraving and the name Ward engraved forward of the hammers. The hammers have the same simple engraving. The mechanics of both locks function fine, locking in half and full cock. The trigger guard assembly and nose cap have engraving also. The escutcheon plates are brass plated with German silver. A small circular medallion is on the bottom of the stock comb. The oak stock is in good condition, but does show evidence of repair in the wrist area. The wrist is checkered, and the checkering is still very crisp. This is a very nice example of a muzzle loading black powder shotgun from the late 1800's.
