Samuel Sutherland 20 Gauge Shotgun
Item #: AA1137
This is a 20 gauge shotgun manufactured by the firm of Samuel Sutherland of Richmond, Va. Sutherland was located in Richmond from 1852 through 1875. He is referred in the book "Confederate Arms", written by Albaugh & Simmons, as the "Armorer of the South". He operated his business prior to the Civil War under the trade name "Southern Importing House", and was considered to be one of the leading importers of firearms on the entire eastern seaboard. During the Civil War Sutherland operated a large plant devoted mainly to altering flintlock weapons to percussion ignition systems and repairs of damaged weapons. He was known to have supplied weapons to the Virginia state troops as well as the Confederate Army. This weapon has an overall length of 53 1/2" and a barrel length of 37 3/16". The barrel is octagonal to round and has a dark and rusted bore. The exterior of the barrel, along with all the iron hardware, has that black, out of the attic look. The surface is lightly pitted near the bolster area. S SUTHERLAND/RICHMOND VA is stamped on the top barrel flat forward of the breech about 2 1/2". The breech area of the barrel, tang, hammer lockplate and butt plate tang all have simple engravings. The lockplate is also stamped S SUTHERLAND/RICHMOND VA. The lock has a problem, the hammer does not lock in half or full cock. This can be repaired if the buyer wishes. The walnut half stock is in fair condition. There are a couple of large cracks in the lock area on each side of the stock. There are also three deep scratches on the right stock comb. The wrist area has been checkered and shows considerable wear. The nose cap, ramrod thimbles and escutcheon plates are brass. One of the ramrod thimbles is loose, but could also be repaired if the buyer wished. The ramrod is a replacement is broken. There is no documentation that this weapon was Confederate used. However, it's not hard to imagine that it was carried by some Johnny Reb Infantryman during the early war, as it is perfectly capable of firing a .58 caliber Minie!
