This is a Federal cap box manufactured during the American Civil War. The maker mark on the inside flap is of Edwin Crossman. Crossman had contracts in 1864 -65 for 15,000 sets of Infantry accroutrements, 5,000 sabers belts and plates, 6,100 carbine slings, 2,500 carbine cartridge boxes and halter & stirrup straps. The stamp reads "CROSSMAN/MAKER/NEWARK N.J.". The leather on this pouch is a little dry, but still very pliable. The outer flap shows substantial crazing, but very little flaking. The stitching is still very strong and has no breaks. The brass finial is present, the closure tab is still reporting for duty and is 100% intact! The two belt loops are securely attached to the pouch. The wool and pick are long gone. The little box still displays great, and would be a nice addition to any Civil War display.
