Excavated 6 LBS Solid Shot
Item #: AA1110
This is an excavated 6 pound solid shot cannonball from the Civil War. It measures 3.63" in diameter and weighs 6.4 pounds. This type projectile was meant to be fired from a 6 pound smoothbore cannon. It has not been cleaned or preserved since being excavated. The entire surface has a light crust of rust, but the sphere is very solid. This is the third artillery projectile to come out of a Missouri collection. This projectile was excavated on private property in Lexington, Missouri. The First Battle of Lexington took place from 12 - 20 September, 1861 Union forces, under the overall command of Colonel James Mulligan, were defeated by Confederate forces under the command of Major General Sterling Price. The battle had relatively few casualties, with the Confederates suffering 30 killed in action and 120 wounded. The Union forces suffered 36 killed in action, 117 wounded and 3000 captured. The low casualty figures can be attributed to Colonel Mulligans defensive positions and the use of hemp bales by the Confederates to form a rolling breastworks. These type projectiles were used by both the North and South. Here's an opportunity to own an early war projectile at a reasonable price.
