This is an Enfield rifle from the American Civil War period that has been converted to a shotgun. The gun measures 55 1/2" overall, with a 39" barrel. The barrel has a nice even dark brownish patina, with the exterior of the barrel being smooth. The bolster area shows moderate pitting and pin pricking. On the left side by the breech are London barrel proof marks. The front sight is a brass blade type, while there is no rear sight. Two ramrod thimbles and a nose cap thimble have been added to the underside of the barrel to secure the iron ramrod. The bore is now a .16 gauge shotgun size and is brown and rusted approximately half way don from the muzzle end. The lock plate is marked with a crown behind the hammer and 1862/TOWER forward of the hammer. The hammer and lockplate have a bit lighter patina than that of the barrel. The mechanics are excellent, the hammer holds in half and full cock and strikes the original nipple hard when the trigger is depressed. The original brass trigger guard and butt plate have been replaced with iron components. There are no barrel bands, the barrel now being retained by three escutcheon pins. The trigger closely resembles a Model 42 Springfield, but has no sling swivel provision. The butt plate has a long narrow tang with simple engraving applied. The nose cap and thimbles are made of brass and have a dark mustard patina. The oak stock is still full length. The wood is in very good condition and has small bumps and dings from normal use. There are no cracks or wood loss. The stock has been inletted for the butt plate tang and the underside of the stock comb has been cut down flat. This appears to be a Civil War long arm that was converted to shotgun use after the war. The conversion is well done and obviously not a field product. The second one we've gotten into the shop!
