This is an excavated 6 pound solid shot cannonball from the Civil War. It measures 3.62" in diameter and weighs 5.4 pounds. This type projectile was meant to be fired from a 6 pound smoothbore cannon. It has not been cleaned or preserved since being excavated. The entire surface has a light crust of rust, but the sphere is very solid. This one was excavated in Cooper County, Missouri near Boonville. There were four battles fought in this area during the Civil War, all during 1861. These type projectiles were used by both the North and South.
