This is a Model 1840 Non Commissioned Officers sword from the Civil War era. The sword has an overall length of 38 3/4", with a blade length of 32 1/4". It has a 30 3/4" fuller and a width of 13/16". The blade has a bight, unblemished finish with a couple of minute nicks along the edge. The obverse ricasso is stamped US/AHC/1862 and the reverse is stamped Made by/AMES Mfg Co/CHICOPEE/MASS. The hilt is brass and has a cast brass grip. Both of the guards are extended and rigid. The obverse side of the knucklebow is stamped with AHC. The brass has taken on a dull mustard patina. The red moroccan leather washer is still present. The leather scabbard has an issue. The leather is in good condition, the seam is tight and the brass throat is fine, but the drag is missing. The brass on the scabbard matches the hilt perfectly. This is an overall good condition sword, just needs a drag put on it, perfect for the beginning collector.
