Infantry Artificer Brassard
Item #: AA1090
This is an Infantry Artificer Brassard authorized from the Indian Wars through the Spanish American War. An artificer was a skilled craftsman and each branch was authorized them. I would suspect that an artificer in an Infantry unit was most likely used as an armorer to repair and maintain weapons organic to that unit. The brassard is made of heavy dark blue wool with two crossed white sledgehammers sewn in. It measures 7 3/4" wide and 5 1/2" tall. The artificer was authorized to wear one brassard on each sleeve. If the enlisted man was a corporal or above, the brassards were worn just below the rank insignia. These are pretty rare and come out of the old Bannerman collection. They would go great on an Indian War or Span Am armorer display.
