This is a Model 1884 trapdoor rifle manufactured at the Springfield Armory. Between 1884 and 1890 there were 235,560 weapons produced at the armory, with approximately 200,000 of them being rifles. These rifles and carbines were the standard arms of the US Army during the Indian Wars. This rifle has an overall length of 52", with a barrel length of 32 1/2". The bore is chambered in .45-70 caliber and is bright with rifling showing. The barrel is proof marked with V/P/eagle/P on the left just forward of the breech. A Buffington rear sight is located 2 1/4" forward of the receiver. This sight, along with the different breechblock, are the most evident changes in the 1884 versus 1873 rifle. The breech has a lower arc and is stamped with US/MODEL/1884. The serial number of 271284 is stamped onto the rear of the breech. All hardware, with the exception of the breech block and tang, have a blue finish. The breech block and tang are case hardened. Both barrel bands are stamped with the letter U. The lockplate is stamped with an eagle forward of the hammer, as well as US/SPRINGFIELD. The buttplate is stamped with the letters US and the number 10. The walnut stock is full length and is in exceptional condition. There is one scratch one the finish on the left side of the stock. The wood isn't gouged and this could be easily corrected. There is a rectangular cartouche on the left wrist of the stock that reads SWP/1890. The correct swelled cleaning rod is still with the gun. A leather sling, incorrect for this weapon, came with the gun and will accompany it to the new owner. If you are a collector of the Indian Wars era you should not let this one pass you by.
