This is a Model 1860 Naval Cutlass manufactured by Sheble & Fisher during the Civil War. The cutlass has an overall length of 32 1/4". The slighly curved blade measures 28 1/4" long, has a width of 1 3/16" at the ricasso, and has a 3/8" spine. it has a 24 1/2" fuller and an 18" false edge. The blade and iron cup hilt have a matching subdued steel gray patina. The edge is free of nicks or any other damage. The obverse ricasso is stamped USN/anchor/61, the reverse ricasso is stamped SHEBLE&FISHER in an arc above PHILADa. The number 10 is also stamped into the reverse side. On the inside of the guard the letters US have been stamped near the top of the guard, and as the weapon is held the lettering is upside down. The original leather washer is still on the blade. The back strap of the hilt is slightly darker in appearance than the rest of the sword. The grip is mostly devoid of the original sharkskin wrap and all the wire is missing. This one came in the shop missing the leather scabbard that goes with this style sword. This is a good looking example of a US Naval cutlass used during the American Civil War.
