This is a Model 1857 Cartridge box for a .69 caliber rifled musket from the Civil War. This box has no makers marks or sub inspector stamps. The cartridge box measures 7 1/8" wide, 5 1/4" tall and 1 5/8" deep. There is no leather shoulder strap with this box. There is no brass US cartridge box plate attached to the outer flap, doesn't like as if there ever was. The outer flap is in good condition. The leather closure tab is still full length with no damage and is secure to the box. The brass finial is straight and tight to the box. Both roller buckles for the shoulder strap are present and secure to the box. The belt loops are period riveted onto the box. The inner flap for the cartridge box tins has a small amount of crazing. Both of the cartridge box tins is present. The tins, as well as the rest of the box, show plenty of use and honest wear. The implement pouch, flap and closure tab are in good order. The stitching is still very tight on this box. This is a good example of a Civil War accoutrement that was carried by every soldier on both sides that fired a shot in anger.
