This is a set of World War II Parachutist's Wings, more commonly referred to as "Jump Wings". This badge was designed by Cpt William Yarborough of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment and approved for use on 10 March, 1941. In order to qualify to were the badge a 'trooper" had to complete Airborne training that included 5 jumps. This criteria is still in place today, and earning your wings also comes with the title of "5 Jump Chump"! This set of wings are marked Sterling, but have no maker mark. The badge is a pin back, and has the thinner, American made pin. The round catch works perfectly and holds the pin secure when closed. Two bronze campaign stars have been soldered on the front to indicate the wearer made combat jumps. Each star represented one jump under combat conditions, with a maximum of 5 stars being "unofficially" authorized. Paratroopers who made the Normandy jump were authorized to attach a bronze arrowhead, indicating they were the spearhead of an operation. During WWII the 82nd Division made more combat jumps that the 101st. If you are a collector of WWII Airborne memorabilia your collections isn't complete without a set of these.
