Model 1891 Signal Corps Dress Helmet Plume
Item #: AA1066
This is a scarce black horsehair plume for the Model 1881 US Dress Helmet. The original color for the Signal Corps was orange, adopted in 1872 and continued to be until 1891. In 1891 all facings on the dress uniform coat and helmet plume were changed to black. Black was used to represent the Signal Corps until 1902. During the plains and frontier era the US Army Signal Corps was a small and elite group of soldiers. They were widely scattered throughout the west, manning remote sites along telegraph lines and in frontier forts. In 1889 the Signal Corps was increased to 320 enlisted men and a mere 14 Lieutenants, with no NCO's being authorized. Anybody who's spent time in the military knows you can't get anything done without a good NCO! Anyway, with the small size of the Signal Corps it makes these black helmet plumes very hard to come by. This plume is full length, and appears to be in excellent unused condition. If you collect Signal Corps memorabilia, or have an 1881 Dress Helmet collection, you need this to make it complete!
