This is a Second Model Allin Conversion of the Model 1863 Springfield rifle musket. The Second Model Allin was the result of the failures of the First Model 1865 rifle, particularly in the ejection system. Around 25,000 model 1863 percussion muskets were altered at the Springfield Armory during 1866, becoming known as the Second Model Allin Trapdoor. The Second Model changes included a lengthened breech block, a .50 caliber liner installed in the barrel, a firing pin spring and a stronger internal extraction system that replaced the more fragile rack and pinion system. This rifle measures 55 3/4" overall and has a 40" barrel. The barrel, along with all the other iron hardware, has the "National Bright" finish. The only markings on the barrel are the Springfield eagle head on the left side breech, with a sub inspector letter S below the eagle. The exterior of the barrel is free of pitting or rust. The bore is bright with good rifling showing. All three barrel bands have the letter U stamped in them, and are also free of rust or pitting. The breech block is stamped "1866/Eagle" and the lock plate is stamped US/SPRINGFIELD forward of the hammer and 1865 behind the hammer. The mechanics of the lock work perfect. The breech block retains the original blackened finish. The butt plate is stamped with US and has a darker patina than the rest of the iron furniture. The original bright ramrod/cleaning rod is present, as are both sling swivels. The stock retains the original finish, and shows two small repairs. One is a plug type repair on the left stock flat, while the other is a smaller plug type repair below the lock plate forward of the hammer. The shadow of a cartouche is visible on the left stock flat. The wood is free of cracks and has only a small amount of wood loss along the ramrod channel. A few small dings and bumps are scattered along the stock from normal handling. This is an original condition example of a scarce early transitional breech loading cartridge long arm.
