This is an excavated Starr Carbine barrel and receiver from the Civil War. Between 1861 and 1864 there were over 20,000 of the these carbine made by the Starr Arms Company of Yonkers, New York. They were chambered in .54 caliber, had a 21" barrel and an overall length of 37.65". The breech block serial number of 3879 is still visible, meaning this is an early production carbine. The patent stamp at the rear of the breech is still visible and reads STARR PATENT/SEPT 14th 1858. The front sight is still on the barrel, however the rear sight is missing. The saddle ring is present and is not frozen in position. The action is still operational and the bore, though dark, still has visible rifling. I don't have any history on this one, so I can't say where it was recovered. It is a cool piece of Civil War history from the 5th largest arms maker during the war.
