This is a Model 1857 Cartridge box for a .69 caliber rifled musket from the Civil War. This box has two stamps on the outside, one on each side. A sub inspectors stamp is on the bottom right croner and the maker is stamped into the bottom left corner. The stamp of the maker C.S. Storm of New York is one each side. The cartridge box measures 7 1/8" wide, 5 1/4" tall and 1 5/8" deep. The leather shoulder strap is still with this box, but it is in relic condition. It is broken in a couple of places and repaired in a couple more. The leather is crazed and very fragile. You can see where the breast plate was once, but it is no longer there. The brass US cartridge box plate is still attached to the outer flap. The outer flap is very torn in a couple of places at the bottom and is heavily crazed with loss of leather. The leather closure tab has been replaced with another piece of leather that looks to be glued on. The brass pear shaped finial is straight and tight to the box. Both roller buckles for the shoulder strap are missing and a strip of tin has been placed in the bottom of the box with studs extending through the bottom of the box. Two square nuts have been used to secure the shoulder strap to the box. The belt loops are period riveted onto the box. The inner flap for the cartridge box tins has a small amount of crazing. Both of the cartridge box tins is present. The tins, as well as the rest of the box, show plenty of use and honest wear. The implement pouch flap and closure tab are in good order. The implement pouch itself is in a poor state of repair, being torn off the box completely. Surprisingly, the stitching is still very tight on this box. It looks as though this one got wet at sometime and the leather has just started to deteriorate. If you collect relic condition items this one will fit right in!
