This is a Cavalry scabbard from the Civil War period. The iron scabbard measures 33 1/2" from the throat opening to the tip of the drag. The throat measures 1 5/16" while the scabbard sheath is 33". The throat insert is missing and both mounts are brass with brass suspension rings. The body of the scabbard has some scattered pitting and several small dents, mostly near the drag. The area around the throat is slightly dented, which may explain the missing insert. The end of the scabbard by the drag has a puncture hole on either side of the drag. It looks as if the sword this scabbard was housing might have been just little to long. If you have a loose 33" Cavalry sword laying around this old scabbard will do it some justice!
