This is a German Panzer Assault Badge in bronze from World War II. The badge is of die struck alloy construction with a bronze washed finish. It is a vertically oval, oak leaf wreath with a Wehrmacht style eagle with down swept wings. The eagle clutches a canted swastika in it's talons. Beneath the eagle is the frontal profile of a tank. The back of the badge has a thin vertical pin on a hinge and a soldered catch. There is no makers mark on the badge. The Panzer Assault Badge in silver was introduced for all ranks of tank personnel who served as a tank commander, driver, gunner or radio operator on 20 December, 1939. Award criteria was that the crew member had to be involved in three different armored assaults on three different days. On 1 June, 1940 a bronze version of the Panzer Assault badge was introduced for presentation to Panzer Grenadier, medical and armored car personnel having participated in three different assaults on three different days. Later badges had numerals of 25, 50, 75 and 100 to recognize personnel who had participated in that many assaults. These were later war badges. This Bronze Panzer Assault badge has great eye appeal. It would look great in your WWII collection!
