This is a Federal Breast Plate from the American Civil War. It is in great condition considering was excavated. Unfortunately this one came into the shop with no history, so no story of where it was dug. The plate has a beautiful dark chocolate patina with some dirt of the excavation remaining around the rim and in the relief areas of the eagle. It actually creates a great contrast and makes the eagle really stand out. There is one small dimple on the face of the plate, just to the left of the eagle's head. The back retains all the lead. The original wire hooks are still present, but show the effects of being in the ground. There is no visible makers mark on the back. This is an iconic piece that easily identifies with the American Civil War in excellent condition for an excavated example.
