P1856 Cavalry Carbine JS Anchor Marked Reduced Price!
Item #: AA1050
This is a British P1856 Cavalry Carbine from the Civil War period. These weapons are hard to come by, but this one is extremely rare. The overall length of the carbine is 36 3/4", with a barrel length of 21". The barrel has a dark brown patina with moderate pitting around the top of the breech and bolster area. It is stamped with London barrel proof marks on the left side near the breech. The front sight is still reporting for duty, the rear sight is missing. The bore is dark with light rust and some pitting. The rifling is still very visible and the bore gages at .62 caliber, so this one did some shootin! The original nipple is still screwed into the barrel but is broken and flattened. The lock plate is marked in two lines, E.P. Bond/LONDON. The hammer, lock plate and both barrel bands all have the same matching patina as the barrel. It seems that the main spring is broken, as the hammer will not lock in half or full cock. The saddle bar and ring are securely mounted on the left stock flat, and match the rest of the iron pieces patina wise. The trigger guard, butt plate and nose cap are all brass and have a rich golden hue mixed with mottled dark spots. There are no sling swivels on this one and the captive ramrod is no longer present. Most of the P56's I've seen have been missing the captive rammer. Seems it was easier to load with a conventional ramrod instead of fooling with that thing. The ramrod present is probably the original one with the button head and swivel removed. The stock shows honest wear from service, having the normal bumps and bruises. There are two small age cracks, one on each side of the stock flats. The one on the right side extends from the lock plate back to the end of the flat, approximately 3/4" long. The other crack is on the left side stock flat, extending from the rear saddle bar screw forward towards the breech, approximately 1" long. These are hairline stress cracks and in no way detract from the eye appeal of this scarce Confederate weapon. Last , but not least is the JS anchor mark on the stock comb, just forward of the butt plate tang. It is a little light, but clearly visible with the naked eye. These Confederate import marked weapons saw hard use from the time they arrive at port until the war ended. Even though this little saddle carbine has a couple of issues, the rarity of it out weighs them. It is believed that there are less than two dozen of these carbines around. If you are a fan of Confederate weapons, Cavalry carbines or imported weapons you should not let this one pass you by!
