This is a Non Regulation Foot Officer's Sword from the American Civil War era. The sword has an overall length of 37 3/4", with a blade length of 32 3/4". The blade has a very slight curve and a 22 1/2" fuller. The obverse ricasso has a small brass disk inset that is stamped PROVED, surrounded by an etched sun burst. The reverse ricasso has a faint etching of a shield, no maker is visible. The blade itself is still mostly bright, with a couple of areas of dark aging. The blade has been etched with military emblems and symbols on both sides. The US and E Pluribus Enum are absent from this blade, which suggests this sword was not manufactured for the United States military. There is a one small nick along the edge. This one could be cleaned up to reveal a nice bright etched blade once again. The brass hilt has achieved a bronze patina. The guard is very ornate, with floral designs and flourishes throughout. The wooden grip is covered in a marine skin that is 95% intact. The double strand twisted wire remains tight to the grip, as well as the two single strands. The backstrap has a simple crosshatch design, the same is true of the pommel cap. The peen on the pommel remains undisturbed. The blade is very tight to the hilt. This is one really nice sword from the Civil War era.
