This is a British Duty bugle, commonly referred to as the Model 1855 bugle. It measures 11 1/2" in length and is 4" across the opening. There are no makers marks or stamps to positively identify this one, but I am positive it is European made. The contrast of brass and copper present an eye pleasing golden patina. The silver mouth piece is secured to the bugle by the original chain. This style bugle was used by the British Army during the 19th century through the early 20th century. The Infantry as well as Cavalry units had buglers to communicate orders to their units over the deafening sounds of the battlefield. I am sure that this one was used during the American Civil War. If you collect Civil War Cavalry items your collection is not complete without a bugle. This one will fit those needs nicely!
